Activity app not syncing with new phone

Ever since I migrated to a new phone (from an iphone 7 to XR), my apple watch does not sync my activities to the new device. The devices are paired and I get notifications and updates for all apps except for activities.


When I open the activities app on my phone, it tells me to open the app on my watch, see screenshot.


When I open the app on my watch, it tells me to open the app on my phone!!!! see screenshot.
