pages table of contents

Why can't I generate a table of contents in Pages?

I have applied styles to the headings I want, and asked the TOC generator to refer to these styles. I can see a TOC on the screen, but when I ask Pages to insert it into the document, I get the message "The table of contents is empty because you aren't using the paragraph styles set to appear in it".

Screenshot of the confusing situation. Thanks for any guidance

Hi Ian,

Thank you for your reply.

When I do that, it shows me that the paragraph styles I want in the contents are chosen.

The current screenshot (attached) shows one item in the contents, and that is from a page before the Table of Contents I've attempted to enter - I ended up doing a manual TOC, headed with paragraph style Heading 1.

Then, today, on attempting to enter an auto TOC after I read your reply, the auto TOC has indexed the manual TOC heading, but nothign from the remainder of the document that comes AFTER the auto TOC page, even though those headings use the same Paragraph style, and I have chosen "Entire Document" as the range.

This is so frustrating.

THank you
