iPhone 5s stuck in dfu mode

I need some help here.

i recently got my mother in law another 5s after she dunked hers in the creek. I set up her phone and she was unable to download apps so I updated her payment info in iTunes and connected her phone to update it and now it’s stuck in dfu mode. I followed the instructions of holding both the power and home buttons for 10 seconds numerous times but it’s still stuck in dfu. I have dr.fone and tried to erase it like I just did on my sons iPhone 5s but can’t due to the fact that it’s in dfu mode and now I’m out of ideas. Any help is much appreciated!!!

See this for information about error 9, If you see error 9, 4005, 4013, or 4014 when you restore your iOS device - Apple Support

Why are you taking information from some 3rd party software rather than working with Apple on their device. The fact the device is showing the connect to iTunes screen does not mean it is in DFU mode, it is, as you stated, in Recovery Mode. Twisted, if you have a nearby Apple Store you can definitely see if the Genius Bar with a free appointment can get it working again.

But if you don't have a nearby Apple Store I would again suggest you give ReiBoot a try. The one feature the free trial lets you do is kick an iPhone into, and out of, Recovery Mode. It's literally the most common 3rd-party tool used at Apple Authorized Service Providers.

The iPhone 5S was introduced by Apple in 2013 and discontinued in early 2016. So it's very likely that the iPhone was previously owned.

Perhaps it was Activation Locked, in which case the iPhone will remain useless without the assistance of the original owner.

iTunes recognizes it immediately and attempts to restore, extracts the software and during the software verification it gives me error 9. The screen shows the phone is in recovery mode but dr.fone says it’s in dfu mode. I don’t care about saving any data. I backed up before I attempted to update. Dr.fone wants $60.00 to restore which is just robbery.

I’ve followed all the steps to get it out of dfu to erase with dr.fone but nothing is working. Are there any free tools to exit recovery/dfu mode? I just want to wipe the dang phone and start over.

screen on phone shows usb cable to iTunes which is recovery mode but dr.fone claims dfu mode.

I’ve tried every USB port and 3 different cables & reset my router as well.

I got the dreaded error 9 on my sons 5s that I bought to replace the one he sent through the laundry 🤨 I got him another 5s that had restrictions enabled and they forgot the passcode, that’s why I have df.fone. I used dr.fone to totally erase his 5s and all is good with it now.

when I started setting up my mother in laws phone she had never connected it to iTunes and the only trusted device was the phone she dunked in the creek. I wasn’t able to get the verification code and as a result couldn’t sign in to the App Store even though it would sign into iCloud with her appleID... that why I was trying to restore her 5s. I found her payment information was out of date and fixed that but still wouldn’t let me sign into the App Store... now I’m stuck. Hopefully I can get this figured out.

connecting to iTunes could break an iPhone?

no it wasn’t jail broken

i have only 1 computer.

i have been a loyal apple customer since the iPhone 3g I have never encountered any problems connecting to iTunes before. I’m using my iPhone 7 to type this message.

If you’re reading tone into my posts then you are incorrect. I’m not in any way trying to be an ***. Maybe it was a miracle that dr.fone solved a problem on a different iPhone, I don’t know. I’m here to get advice on what to do now. I’m trying to use apple software to fix this iPhone.

Mid my posts came across as me being sh*#*y I apologize, I didn’t mean for that to be the case. I am super frustrated as I’ve been trying to fix this issue for 2 days now.
