Internal vs External SSD options?
Hello, I am looking to purchase a new iMac 2019 27" with the i9 processor, SSD, and upgraded RAM (OWC brand on my own). I am trying to understand the Pros/Cons of 2 SSD options. They both cost the same at the end of the day, so its just a matter of which is better.
1) Upgrade internal to 1TB SSD ($500) and add a 2TB SSD with Thunderbolt 3 ($475) (Glyph Atom RAID SSD 2TB, 950 MB/s) = 1TB internal, 2TB external = 3TB total for $975
2) Upgrade internal to 512GB SSD ($100) and add a 4TB SSD with Thunderbolt 3 ($880) (Glyph Atom RAID SSD 4TB, 950 MB/s) = 0.5TB internal, 4TB external = 4.5TB total for $980
Option 2 feels like the obvious answer, but I don't know if that will be slower/more of a pain to deal with? My current computer has about 2.5TB filled, but only about 750GB of that are system software, applications, and often accessed material. Of course, I expect that to grow over the next 6 years or so which is how long I expect to own this next computer.
As an aside, I plan to get a larger 8TB SATA external as a Time Machine backup drive, and I am not opposed to using an external SATA for storage of rarely accessed material.
Your thoughts/advice are very appreciated, thanks!
