Trying to save text messages to cloud

I am being told that I can save my text messages to the cloud but when i select back up the text messages do not get uploaded. I just had to upgrade to an iphone 8 plus from an iphone 7 plus. I need to transfer my old text messages to the new phone

Go to Settings/<your name>/iCloud and turn on Messages on the old phone. Do the same on the new phone.
