Photos black on Facebook with Safari

At the end of 2017 there were reports on here of pictures appearing black on Facebook when viewed in Safari on High Sierra. I have belatedly updated to 10.13.6, with Safari 12.1.1, and have run into the same problem. Normal viewing of Facebook pages is OK. The problem occurs when I click on an image to enlarge it. And not all pictures -- just some.

Did anyone ever find a fix for this strange behaviour? I have tried the usual ideas of clearing caches.

Did you ever try the Safe Mode?

Safe Mode - About

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. If the log won’t post, try posting it in Pastebin and provide a link in a reply        Pastebin
