Messages being downloaded that I never see on my Mail app

On opening my mail app or using "get mail" I often see in the activity box at the bottom left of the page many messages being downloaded that I never see. Sometimes I see large numbers of draft messages I have not created being created automatically and then sent that are also invisible in my mailboxes. Is this normal maintenance activity or have I got a problem?
