Verification failed

"Verification Failed" There was an error connecting to the Apple ID server.

I have received this warning on both my son's ipad and ipod with this being the second time on the ipod within the past couple of weeks. All the alleged fixes do not work and last time I was able to fix the ipod through the ipad by retrieving a code for it. This time both devices have this issue and I do not have another device connected to their account to retrieve the code.
