Phone number not showing up on ipad for messages

I am trying to get my son's ipad to send and receive messages from his phone number but it is not showing up in the messages section. I have my phone number and my wife's but not my son's. His phone is on my apple.id, but it is not available to send and receive messages on his ipad.
