Strange photos appearing in screensaver

I've noticed some old (deleted) photos in a screensaver that's designed to read the Photo Library.photoslibrary file (assuming it's seeing it as a folder). I've duplicated it, and taken the photos and videos out of the copied version, but I want to remove the photos and videos from the original library-- safely! Is there an app, or some way to remove these items so that I can reduce the size of the Library file?

Mac mini, macOS 10.14

The Desktop and Screensaver will use the Photos Library, that is currently enabled as the System Photo Library. If you are seeing photos in Desktop&Screensaver, that are currently not in your Photos Library, you may be using a different System Photo Library. Try the following:

  • Launch Photos on your current library.
  • Open Photos > Preferences > General. If "Use as System Photo Library" is not grayed out, click it. Thene restart Photos.
  • Open System Preferences > Desktop & Screensaver. Now select again a slideshow Screensaver theme. Then click on the "Source" menu at the right, scroll down to the bottom and select Photo Library". Select the album you want to use. This should replace the previously selected folder with images.

The photos library is the same one that is assigned as the system photo library. When I say I duplicated the photos library, I only did that because I wanted to not potentially damage the main photos library. When I manipulated the copied version of the photos library, I saw photos that were not showing up in photos normally. I’m assuming that these photos exist in the original, but do not show up in the photos app because I deleted them through the app at some point, but are remaining in the photos library itself.
