Far away restarting

Regarding AirPort Extreme , Is there an option to restart it from far away when I'm not at home ?

Let's say that I'm far away in another state and the airport need to restart because of a failure , Can I restart it without being at home ?

Thanks

Yes.....IF.......

1) You have a simple modem......the kind with only one Ethernet port

2) Your AirPort Extreme is operating as the main router on your network.......and is setup to provide DHCP and NAT service

3) Your ISP provides you with a Static Public IP address for your service (normally this would not be the case unless you have a business level account)

4) You have setup Port Mapping on the AirPort Extreme

So, the first thing to check would be to make sure that you have a simple modem. If you are not sure, post back with the make and model number of the device that you call your modem.

A simple modem will look like this:

1) In AirPort Utility, click on the main AirPort Extreme and a smaller window will appear with info about the AirPort. Look for the IP Address. It cannot be anything that starts with 192.x.x.x or 10.x.x.x or 72.x.x.x

Is this the case?

What is the IP Address? Do not post the entire address. For example, if the address is something like 62.143.34.222........post back with 62.xxx.xx.xxx.

2) Next, look for the LAN IP Address on the next line. It will be 10.0.1.1 unless you have changed the address range.

Is this the case? If you have changed the address range, what is the LAN IP address?

3) Finally, check to make sure that you do NOT see any type of Status Message like Double NAT.

OK, thanks for the info. No guarantees that this will work with a modem/router that has been set up to function as a modem only, but here is how to try things out.

Open AirPort Utility

Click on the Main Extreme, then click Edit in the smaller window

Click on the Network tab on the next window

Click on the + (plus) button under the Port Settings window

Description Something like Remote Restart

Public UDP 8888

Public TCP 8888

Private IP Address 10.0.0.1

Private UDP 548

Public UDP 548

Save and Update settings

Restart your Mac

Connect the Mac to the remote network and make sure that Internet is working

Open AirPort Utility

Click on the File Menu at the very top of the screen

Click Configure Other

Type in the Public IP address 217.xxx.xx.xxx

Type in the Admin Password for the AirPort Extreme

That will get you into AirPort Utility for the AirPort

Click on the Base Station menu at the very top of the screen.....up where the File, Window, Help menus are located

Click Restart

Far away restarting
