FCPX putting in place holder when trimming clip

I am not sure what the heck I did but when I trim a clip (option+[ or option+]) it puts in a place holder instead of contracting the timeline like it normally does.

What the heck did I do to get into this mode?

Figured it out. I was in POSITION mode instead of SELECT mode.

Make sure the position tool isn’t active. Press A for the select tool.
