What does "An unknown error occurred (-38)." mean? How to fix it?

Things to try:

Reboot your computer
Launch iTunes in safe mode, press and hold command and option as you launch iTunes, hold until you see a prompt
Reboot the Mac into its safe mode, press and hold shift after you hear the startup chime, then test iTunes
Check behaviour in a different user profile, it works there the issue might be with your specific library
