Checking a URL destination in iOS mail app (change in behavior)

For most of the iPhone and iPad's life, you could safely check the destination of a hyperlink within an email message by pressing on the link and holding it until the menu popped up. This was the equivalent of "hover before you click" within most desktop e-mail clients.

In one of the more recent iOS versions, this behavior changed- pressing and holding launches a window to open up the destination. You can sort of recreate the original behavior by doing a "soft press", which seems to take a combination of dexterity and luck. But as someone who gives security awareness presentations for a living (among other things), I want to give solid advice on how to scrutinize a hyperlink safely - the soft press just has too high an error rate and someone may end up visiting a malicious destination. Any chance Apple will revert this change? Is there another way for a user to easily check a link's actual destination?
