Unlock old iphone

I have an iPhone 6s I want to "unlock" from AT&T and sell the device. I have already "wiped" the phone clean. I tried looking up my IMEI number on my apple account but when attempting to unlock the device, it states the code is incorrect. How do I get the correct code and where can I go to unlock the device free of charge?
