Cannot Import Vide/Pics from iPhone via USB Cable to PC

The "original format" for the current iPhones is in a format that most devices don't support just yet. You've probably seen JPG, PNG, and GIF. But the iPhone is using something called HEIF. It has some technical merits, but the disadvantage is not a lot of devices support it.

A fresh install of Windows does not, out of the box, support it. There is an additional software component needed for Windows to properly handle the format. The additional components are available through the Microsoft Store

Once these are present Windows can natively handle the images.

On your suggestion to use iCloud, I dont see this as a solution for myself. I'm not interested in paying a monthly subscription for the ability to copy a video file off of my phone and iCloud doesnt offer any other services in which I have interest. Also when I am out of my data coverage area (such as when out of the country or on the open sea) a wired connection is the only viable option for copying content off (necessary to keep the storage mem from fklling up with footage).

If that is the only way to get video off then it sounds like the phones functionality may be broken 😞.

I am a user that recently just started to use the iPhone for video. It has an excellent camera. But if getting the video off is going to be such a pain then the experience is broken; excellent video with no viable way to get it off can't compete with a a device with a lower quality camera that has ease of removal. When I try this with any other phone it just works.

Tried on a mac. It fails there too.

My take away: don't use the iPhone for video captures if I think I ever want to copy them off the machine.

I had tried those steps earlier. But I tried them again. The above instructions direct me to use Windows Photo since I am on a Windows 10 machine and to ensure I have the latest version of iOS installed. I have done both.

Per the instructions I start the Import process in Windows Photo, select USB device as my import option, and select the iPhone. The import process begins. After a few moments I receive an error that saus "Something went wrong: Your files might not have been imported." I see that part of a video file has imported.

I appear to be having the same experience that I had with the Windows Explorer when I use Windows Photos.

To ensure that the problem wasn't isolated to this individual machine I have tried two other machines with identical results. I also made sure that I was using a lightning cable that was manufactured by Apple.
