Trying to reset NVRAM on 2017 Macbook Pro with touch bar without startup chime

My Macbook Pro currently suffers from a black screen. I can still use it with an external monitor and bluetooth keyboard, but want to follow instructions to reset NVRAM as a hopeful fix. All instructions I find doesn't take into account that with a black screen and no startup chime, I have no idea when it has been "turned on" and time to hit the reset key sequence.

Am I missing something??

Thanks.

Perhaps it is better to power off the laptop and close the lid. Open the lid and immediately press & hold the PRAM reset for a full minute so you know the reset is activated several times. The newer systems boot so quickly that you have to do this quickly after powering on. Of course with a newer laptop with a broken display you don't even know for sure if you actually powered on the laptop.
