MacBook Pro 13 Inch heating

I've had this MacBook for like three weeks now, I've noticed that when I have it on my lap it starts to get hot and the fans kick on. But sometimes when I'm like just watching Netflix, the fan starts to kick up fast. Is this common?

MacBook heating issue Recently, I have noticed that my MacBook Air gets hot within 5 minutes of being turned on. The heating is limited to a small region above the keyboard. I do not use the MacBook for any heavy task. I rarely watch videos on it but use Safari a lot. This issue, however had never happened until now. I do not use my MacBook for prolonged periods either. MacBook Pro 16" Over Heating and Noise My MacBook Pro 16" has a very loud fan and heats up very quickly (5 mins or less) on flat non obstructed surfaces while web browsing (nothing heavy duty) Is this normal? My 2013 15.6" still does not do that under the same conditions.

Yes that is common.

Notebook computers do best on a flat level surface to help facilitate adequate airflow.
