Downgraded iTunes to 12.6.5 ... now won't launch

I downgraded iTunes to version 12.6.5 in order to manage iPhone apps in iTunes - per advice from Apple Support. Now I cannot launch iTunes since "iTunes Library.itl" was created in a newer version of iTunes. The only options it gives me are "Upgrade" or "Quit". Any ideas how I can get this to work?

MacBook Pro 13", macOS 10.13

See Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash - Apple Community. Revert to a library old enough to work with iTunes 12.6.5.3, i.e. a library made by something before you installed iTunes 12.7 or later, or create a new library by holding down option as you launch iTunes. To avoid loosing too much data from the most recent library you may want to reinstall the current version of iTunes, export the library as an XML file, switch back to 12.6.5 and then import the XML into a new empty library. You will lose date added, but everything else should be captured. You'll need to import your locally stored apps again.
