AirPods battery life

Why do the AirPods drain battery when not in ear? If I take them out and leave them by my bed at night after listening to music and I wake up in the morning, they are completely drained and dead. Why wouldn't they just turn off or tap to turn off so that you save the battery?

AirPods Max battery life? I am finding the battery life of my AirPods Max much lower than my Sony or Bose ANC headphones. I think the reason is that the Bose and Sony can be easily be turned off, and have a timer to automatically shut off. I never use cases for any of these headphones, but simply take them off and leave them next to me. It appears that the AirPods Max quickly drain power in this state, and there is no way to turn them off. As a result, I find I have to recharge the AirPods much more frequently than the Bose or Sony’s. Are others having this battery experience?

Is there a way to put airpods to sleep when not in use? I notice that my airpods will drain quickly if they are left out for a few hours without use of the charging case. Is there a setting that can be adjusted so that battery is preserved when not in use? I have another pair of wireless ear buds I use for workouts (different brand/product) and they barely lose anything if they are left out for a few hours and they are two years older.

They should be stored in the case when not in use.
