Samsung T5 1TB disconnected after software update

Hi,

Today I got my new Samsung T5. I plugged it in to my Mac, I installed the Samsung Portable SSD Software and I chose a password for the built in encryption of the ssd. Everything is fine so far. The samsung Portable SSD software detected an update for my new ssd and of course I updated it (to 1.6.3). However after the update I reboot the computer and the SSD is not detected in finder. I can only see one device called "T5_SETUP" which seems to be a small partition of the SSD with the installation files for the Samsung Portable SSD software. I have tried following the steps from this thread but I can't see the request from samsung under security and privacy. Any ideas on what to do?

Hi again,

I have now a solution for my problem after e-mailing Samsung memory support.

The problem was the software version of SamsungPortableSSD. After contacting them Samsung provided me with an older version of the program (1.6.2) and gave me instructions on how to remove the bad version. After removing the bad version and installing the version Samsung provided me with the T5 worked as it should again.

I hope that this information helps anyone else having the same issue with the Samsung software.

Is this even for real? 'World class' company provides software update that simply turns a device into a brick of the box?

I need to sent an email somewhere to unbrick it?

When does user segment turned into an enterprise.

Could anyone send me that 1.6.2.pkg, so I can finally put it onto a cloud or something, such that anyone can access?

Thanks!

I have a question: why are you using that software?

No external hard drive requires any software to function; the only requirement is to format it correctly for Mac which is easily done in Disk Utility.

Additionally, since you do have a T5, here is some information on it (scroll down to not recommended):

Edit: the hosts will most likely be removing the email addresses; we are not allowed to publish private information here. And private messaging or sending actual files is not encouraged. Personally, I would certainly not open any email from a stranger especially if it contains a link.

Thank you very much Andrew.

I am able to recover my 500 GB T5 from this issue using software downloaded from https://www.samsung.com/au/support/model/MU-PA1T0B/WW/#downloads

After recovery, as you suggested disabled security. I could not figure out a way to disable update, so I removed the SamsungPortableSSD software. After reboot with default Mac driver it can detect the device and my data is intact.

Am very much surprised such a big loop hole during the software update to have this issue.

Yes, I was in discussion with the customer support team at India through email about this issue.

Today I got an email to visit to nearest service center with contact details to look into this issue.

Luckily I already resolved this issue and I informed about this solution for this issue in this thread and

support for latest version of their software for 10.14.

Hopefully they should address it sooner.

Well, Samsung claims support to Mac OS Maverick or higher. Anyway, the discussion is about using T5 features on Mac, and not a comparison of hardware vs. software encryption.

Unfortunately manufacturer's don't always update their product information and with every macOS update patch you risk third party software breaking. When it comes to third party software controlling access to your data, this can disastrous. Just about every vendor out there will treat Macs as a distant second when it comes to supporting software and devices. Unfortunately it is a Windows centric world and that is where all the money is at for these vendors. Avoid third party software when you can and always be prepared for third party software to stop working.

Because of the potential for third party software to stop working, @babowa is correct to offer software encryption using Filevault as an option because it should just work regardless of any macOS updates. Of course it will be a bit slower, but when using an SSD it should not be noticeable.

While hardware encryption is nice and fast, it also comes with some risks if you must rely on a vendor's third party software for access and control. @babowa and I are just trying to educate Mac users about the risks and providing options.

Hi,

I'm sorry but it is against the Apple community guidlines to share email adresses (something I was unaware of at the time I made my first post). Therefore I will not send you the file in respect of the guidelines, however, there are several posts that have shared links to where you can download the file. Actually there is one post before yours. Please check the thread again and good luck! (I would also advise you to remove your email-address from your post).

Best regards

Patrik
