I cant finish setting up a new iPhone, because it keeps asking me for an apple Id password from a long since abandoned email address and its corresponding password. Any suggestions?
P.S. I think the problem stems from apple ID's that have been combined with my wife account and mine...

Presumably you are restoring to a backup which had store content from that account.
You can reset an account's password : If you forgot your Apple ID password - Apple Support
Or if you need iTunes Support's help to reset it : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ww (click on your country's flag, the country where you live, and which is therefore the country on the account ; click on Contact Support towards the top right ; click on Get Help under 'Talk To Us’)
