I want to share my wifi airport (en0) via my ethernet connection (en5) on my MacBook Pro

Hello experts,

I want to share my wifi airport (en0) via my ethernet connection (en5) on my MacBook Pro (10.14.4 version). So I can access the hotspot on my phone.

I know how to do it via Internet Sharing Feature and it works well. But my question is the DHCP IP address is always 192.128.2.x by default, I can't use this range because it conflicts with my office network.

Could you please show me how to modify it to, for example, 192.168.100.x ? I also took one day on google to try to find a solution, but no one works. is there any document on this, please ? Thanks in advance.

Best Regards,

Andy

The hotspot created by your Mac acts as software-only Router on behalf of your connected downstream devices.

Your Mac does NOT connect your downstream devices DIRECTLY to the office network using the same (possibly conflicting) IP addresses. Its software-only Router does a Network Address Translation. All requests from downstream devices will appear to originate from your valid, office-issued, local IP address. All responses from the Internet will be Network-Address Translated back before being sent to the correct devices downstream. As always, unsolicited responses are discarded.

The actual address of devices downstream are of no importance, because they are never presented directly to your office Network.

There is no conflict because the addresses issued by your Mac are only seen by downstream devices. All requests going to the Internet will have their local addresses changes using Network Address Translation before being presented to your office Network for Routing.

Just be sure you are making the connection to the correct Wi-Fi Network, by SSID (which most people see as "Network-name")

<<What do you mean by Network-name ? Is it a WIFI SSID name >>

yes, exactly.

Changing the default IP address used by Ethernet Sharing requires probing deep under the hood. There is no simple article that tells how to change it.

Apple chose that number because it would suit most situations, and not conflict with the obvious choices that would exist on most Networks. Your network administrator is either "way too smart", or should go to work for Apple.

Firstly thanks for your reply.

My case is I am connecting to internet via wired cable (the interface on my Mac book pro is "en5") and there is no problem to access internet.

Now I want to access internet on my phone, so I start the WIFI hotspot on Mac book via "Internet Sharing" feature. My phone can scan the SSID shared by Mac book and it can also connected to this SSID and access internet successfully.

The issue is the IP range shared by Mac book is 192.168.2.x. I want to change it to another network, E.g. 192.168.100.x because the 2.x network conflicts with my office network.

If you want to provide a Wi-Fi hotspot form your Mac, there is no need to have a unique IP address, only a unique Network-name. I am sure you do not automatically get the same Network-name as your work Wi-Fi.

Then be certain to connect to the correct Network, and you are online.

--------

Imagine the case of two neighbors who both subscribe to the same service. Chances are they will get the same Router, and it will default to the same local IP address. But because the Network-names are unique, there is no confusion.

Sorry, I can't understand your point very well. What do you mean by Network-name ? Is it a WIFI SSID name or something else, please ?

My MacBook is connecting to internet via ethernet port and it will get an IP address from office DHCP server. The IP range provided by office DHCP server is from 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.3.250 (Netmask is 255.255.252.0). Other office device A can also get an IP address from the same DHCP server and for example, It gets the IP 192.168.2.2.

Now I open the Internet sharing on my MacBook and it will provide a WIFI hotspot with IP range 192.168.2.0/24.

So my phone can connect to this WIFI hotspot and maybe it will get the same IP 192.168.2.2 with above device A.

Here a confliction comes.
