Icloud storage plan

I used to have a iphone 6 and struggled with the storage.

I subscribed to the Icloud: 50GB storage plan but didnt find my storage on the phone improved.

Im not very good with technology but i ended up with a files app also which now contains a good chunk of my photos.

I have since upgraded to the XR and it has plenty of storage. Do i still need to pay for the icloud storage?

Im not actually sure what im paying for with the extra storage and dont just want to cancel and i loose all the photos in the files.

Thanks

iPhone XR, iOS 12

Cloud is a syncing system, not an external hard drive. All data in iCloud are also on the phone. That is why you didn't see the iPhone 6 storage improve.

If you aren't syncing the data from the XR to another device/computer, there is no requirement to use iCloud. Before turning off iCloud syncing, make sure you have full resolution photos on your phone. You can also make a copy of your data to ensure you have a backup before turning off iCloud syncing.

Archive or make copies of your iCloud data

Once you have done that, you can go to Settings/Your Name/iCloud and turn off all syncing. Then downgrade your storage.
