everything very slow

Everything is very slow, applications and even system show up in activity monitor as "not responding", then eventually they do. Plenty of disk space. Here is my etrecheck report. (too long, edited) Don't know whether the problems highlighted need to be dealt with. Thanks!

Remove MacKeeper. Remove Sophos. Unless you specifically need these, remove Flash and remove Java. Fix whatever happened with ZipCloud, or remove it. Then try your tests again.

There are occasionally reasons for modifications to syscrl.conf, and sometimes not. Review the contents of that file.

Upgrade to High Sierra, or consider it.

If you want to keep this Mac for a few more years, replace that hard disk with an SSD too, or consider it. Spinners—hard disks—are comparatively very slow. One of the symptoms of a failing hard disk is slowdowns, too. Crashes, corruptions, and beachballs can all be seen.

And has been requested, use a more current EtreCheck, and open a reply here and then use the looks-like-a-printed-page button to open up a text input box big enough to paste the whole EtreCheck report here.

Etrecheck version 2 is an antique. Please update to a more recent version. 5 or 6 are current.

You are running sops anti-Virus, which is unrelenting in its reading of your files, looking for things that cannot possibly infect your Mac. No third-party anti-Virus works better than the built-in features in MacOS, and third-party anti-virus should be removed.

You can add the entire report by using the "additional text" button, third from the right in the reply window on the forum.
