MacBook randomly crashes

Hi All,

I have recently moved from Windows to Mac and still learning. I have an issue with random crashes. I've got a MacBook Pro 15 inch (Mid-2012 i believe) which came with a new HDD and fresh install of High Sierra. I am using it with an external monitor and a DisplayLink too (so i use two monitors) when at home. I've lifted the below logs from when a crash has happened. As well as the below there does seem to be a recurring log about com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] with a log that says the "service only ran for 0 seconds. Pushing respawn out by 10 seconds" but this seems to be ongoing so am not sure if this is causing the crash or not.

So I worked out what it was; the Skype for Business client seems to have been causing the crashes. Although I downloaded the latest version when I first installed it I noticed there was a new version so downloaded and installed that. I also upgraded to Mojave (well, actually I upgraded to Mojave first but this didn't cure the problem).

Sorry about taking so long to get back to you.

First uninstall the Symantec Anti-Virus Security software by following the developer's instructions unless it is required by your school or employer. AV software and other cleaning apps are not needed on a Mac and usually causes more problems than it solves plus it impacts system performance. If AV software is required, then see if you can use MalwareBytes instead.

I'm not familiar with Devolo so I don't know how it behaves. The Symantec software is known to cause problems though.

You should update the MX300's firmware if you haven't done so already. Pre-M0CR060 firmware had some issues. You can create a bootable SSD firmware updater USB drive using Etcher. Option Boot the USB and select the orange icon labeled "EFI".

Unfortunately macOS system logs are worthless these days for troubleshooting. About the only logs worth looking at are Kernel Panic logs if they exist.

Run EtreCheck with Full Disk Access and post the report here using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper.

Excellent, thanks.

The Symantec is the VIP client (works like a VPN token) rather than an AV solution. Devolo is just a program which monitors my homeplug solution and the crashing started prior to me installing it so nothing there.

I'll give the firmware update a go and report back on that.

I used to use the various Norton products for years, but stopped many years ago when their software quality dropped. I still hear nothing but problems with people using Symantec software these days.

The mistake you made was you bought a MacBook Pro. Not very reliable. My wife’s only lasted 13 months now it needs a new screen and they want to charge us $475 for it. You should’ve stayed windows
