Making Contacts into a document

I have nearly 900 listings in my Contacts. (One of the reasons is that I am involved in alum activities for my college class, so have contact info for all my classmates.)

I want to keep all these contacts, but I do not need them all in my iPhone or on my iPad. However, because they are synced iCloud, all of the contacts are carried in all of my devices. I want to figure out a way to create a record of them that I can keep as a document on my computer. If I have that document, I could then delete contacts to whom I do not need regular access.

In the old(er) days, the parallel app was called Address Book, and you could actually print the entire document (either as a hard copy or by saving as a PDF). That option to print is not available with Contacts.

Mac tech support was (uncharacteristically) not very helpful, although I will call them again because I think I got a neophyte on the phone. In the meantime: Does anyone here have any ideas about how I can create a document out of all my contacts? (I do not want an Excel spreadsheet.)

(And none of the listed topics quite describe what I'm asking about, so I chose "system software" as the topic.)

On your Mac you should be able to open the Contacts app, select all, and then use the File menu Print command. PDF is an option at the lower left of the Print window. I can do that using the Contacts app on my Mac running macOS 10.14.5.

You also said that you don't want an Excel spreadsheet, but just in case, you can open Contacts and select some or all and then drag them to an open Numbers window.
