In the end it was really simple to correct: In the user library select the cache folder and throw it into the trash. Empty the trash, restart Maps and voilá, the maps show again.
Nothing fixes a Mac like throwing the Cache into the trash!

FWIW:
1) the title says "Map showing grid only".
2) I had not heard of this, despite answering questions on this forum for years. Of course, I do not know about everything, and there may well be hundreds of posts about it.
3) I did a quick search on this forum. As it happens, there are quite a few threads with similar titles.
Maybe this one will help: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7900701
Did you bother reading the headline "Maps showing grid only"? It's and old and common problem that has been discussed on this forum dozens of times. It's one of those things that nobody at Apple is interested in taking care of because it's not fancy or flashy and doesn't bring new customers into the store.
So, I was hoping against hope that it may have been fixed or at least a workaround has been found. That's why I asked.
Very funny!
Thanks for looking that up. I have seen that post before and tried what she recommends, but there is no geod on the activity monitor or anywhere else on my mac.
Thanks for posting the solution. Glad it’s solved.
I wasn't trying to be funny.
You did not bother to explain what the problem is.
"Finally got hit with that problem too" --- what problem? If you genuinely are looking for a solution, you need to explain what the problem is, in the first place. You write as if it obvious and well known, but it isn't.
We don't know if it is a problem with the Maps application, or Google Maps, or whatever.
We don't know that there is a common problem with either, that would make it in any way obvious what you are talking about.
Even if the nature of the problem were obvious, you provided no information on your own setup, so that others may be able to provide adequate suggestions.
