2019 MBPro server file access troubleshooting

Just upgraded from a 2016 15" MBP to a 2019 version. Both run Mojave 10.14.5. I have a Synology NAS on the network. While I never had a problem with the 2016 model, for some reason I am having a problem with the 2019 MBP. When I try to access one specific directory on the server, the MBP hangs hard and the only way out is a power cycle! I can access the folder without issue on a 2011 MacBook Air running High Sierra 10.13.5 (APFS file system) and a 2013 iMac running High Sierra 10.13.6 (Journaled HFS+). The server folder in question has 56 sub-folders and has 216 items.

Can anyone offer any ideas or suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?

Thanks.

John

Hello JohnZonie,

Thanks for posting to the Apple Support Communities. I understand the MacBook Pro is hanging when accessing any files on a network drive. I'll be happy to help in any way I can.

Here are some suggestions:

Thanks and have a great day.

Thanks for the reply, Chris.

I tried the permissions repair as suggested without resolving the issue. After a lot more investigation, this appears to be an unfortunate incompatibility between the Synology DSM 5.2 OS and macOS 10.14.5. I tried the same activities with a Yosemite 10.10.5 Virtual Machine and was able to read/write from//to the server without incident. I have posted a query to the Synology support forum.

I don't know whether a permissions/security setting in Mojave would resolve this or not. Any ideas along this line?

Well, it turns out, this wasn't a permanent solution. I could access the folder in question for 3 or 4 clicks on different sub-folders then the MBP would lock up hard, again requiring a power cycle to free things up. This happened on both the admin user and a test user. Some things I tried subsequently:

  1. I copied the folder in question to an old MB Air without a problem. It and its contents were completely accessible.
  2. I then copied it to a 2013 iMac without a problem. Again folder and contents were completely accessible.
  3. Then copied the folder to a thumb drive and then mounted it on the MBP. I could access folder contents on the thumb drive without problem.
  4. I ran disk utility first aid on the thumb drive without a problem.
  5. Tried copying it to the MBP and thence to the NAS. Copy failed with the unhelpful error 5058.
  6. Tried the recommended corrections for this error, including the deletion of the finder plist without success.
  7. Then copied it to an external USB-connected HDD. Copy went ok but Time Machine backup failed until I deleted the folder in question.
  8. I deleted the folder in question from the MBP and time machine backup appeared to run successfully.

So there is "something" about the folder in question or its contents the the macOS, as implemented on the 2019 MBP doesn't like. I am out of ideas on what to do to get to the bottom of this and would greatly appreciate any suggestions for further investigation.

Thanks.

JohnZonie,

Thanks for the additional information and coming back when the solution was temporary.

One item you can check since it's happening when moving the file around is permissions. This will provide a general guide for items in the home folder: Resolve issues caused by changing the permissions of items in your home folder - Apple Support

Here are some other suggestions that can help with permissions. It's from Sierra, but the steps are still the same: macOS Sierra: Set permissions for items on your Mac

If you're still having issues, try reaching out to Synology for any steps that can be done on the NAS itself: Contact Us | Synology Inc.

Best regards.
