Apple Pay changed card now won't add correct card

I have had my Debit Card on Apple Pay since it was released, the card in question ends with 1020.

However, a couple of days ago it somehow changed to 1038 and no longer worked.

I removed the card from Apple Pay and tried to re-install the correct card, but it won't add it. Also, when I go to add a new card, it says it stall has the 1038 one on file.

Does anyone know how I can completely clear the 1038 card from their caché and install the correct card?

Yeah, banks often update cards on Apple Pay when they expire or have to be cancelled for other reasons such as being compromised. I had that experience before with my US issued credit card that I have on Apple Pay and I loved it because I could continue to use my card at some places via Apple Pay while I got the new physical card in the mail (US banks don't ask for the security code to update a card on Apple Pay)

This has now been solved ... in quite a scary way!

It turns out that the card in question was valid until the end of July 2019. In the UK, there is a month cross-over when you get a new card, so the old card has an 'End date' of 08/19, but the new card has a 'Start date' of 07/19.
