I set up a new Time Machine backup for my iMac and it has been stuck on Encrypting Backup Disk 0% for a few days now. Is there something to be done about this? Should I reset it somehow?

I can't be sure since I haven't had it happen to me, nor even felt confident enough to attempt Encryption, but I have read enough posts to say that Shutdown or Restart didn't seem to mess up anything on several occasions.
I am seeing the exact same behavior, with mine progressing at the snail's pace of about 2%/day thus far. It is a 10TB backup disk, so I guess maybe I should just be patient. I did see suggestions elsewhere to encrypt the disk ahead of time with Disk Utility, but TimeMachine just undid everything I did and did it on its own anyway. So, I've just been letting it run. I usually put the system to sleep at night, but I've just been letting it run with just letting the screen sleep.
Just now (literally, less than 30 seconds ago) and it is at 93%. Seems to have picked up a little, but my goodness that is still a long time. I have not turned off the machine since the initial incident, although I think there was one restart in there for a system update...
Aha! Wisdom emerges. Turns out diskarbitrationd and the Western Digital software were having a head butting contest. After some web reading it turns out this is not an uncommon occurrence. I ripped out all the WD stuff (I should have known better than to install third party disk management stuff anyway) and it finished up. Checking the console logs, it was generating several messages per second between the two of them. *doh*
No idea if this works in Terminal for external drive, but...

Open Activity Monitor, anything using too much CPU or Not Responding?
kernel task is using around 10%, i dont see anything anywhere that says not responding, thank you btw

Great, it is working it seems, be patient... I read of it taking a ridiculous 3 weeks or more.
OK so as long as the number is going in terminal, i shouldnt worry that its still at 0% in the Menu Bar? What if I need to restart my computer? Will that mess it up?
Whew, 2% a day, you could easily break the 3 week record I thought ridiculous!
Incredible, I think I'd open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages.
I suspect disk problems. :(
