Activity sharing bug

I just recently received an apple watch series 3, and I learned about the activity sharing feature/ competition feature you can set up in the app. I tried to use it with my friend (also has apple watch series 3) - but when I attempted to share it gave me a notification saying I must update my phone and watch for it to work. I did that, and I restarted both devices, both say they are on the latest versions in the 'about' page. But still when I try to share activity (or he tries to share with me) it says I must update both devices for it to work.
