Outgoing iCloud (.me) email not sending

Get an error message that iCloud is offline but it is not. Able to send message from my phone. Attempting to access server info for iCloud in mail preferences but it does not allow me to access. Tried to set up a new smtp server but don't get options to enter SSL required, port or anything else. Suggestions?

Hey Alex in NJ,

Thanks for the update. If you are trying to enter the SSL information for the SMTP settings, choose Mail > Preferences, click Accounts, then click Server Settings.

"Mail automatically manages settings for your email account in Mail, such as port numbers and authentication methods.

If you deselect this option, you can specify the following, as directed by your email account provider:

  • Port (or Internal Port and External Port), Use TLS/SSL: The port numbers for sending messages, and whether to use TLS/SSL."

Change Server Settings in Mail on Mac

"SMTP information for the outgoing mail server

  • Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
  • SSL Required: Yes
  • If you see an error message when using SSL, try using TLS or STARTTLS instead.
  • Port: 587
  • SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
  • Username: Your full iCloud email address (for example, emilyparker@icloud.com, not emilyparker)"

A follow up and resolution. I did try all of the suggestions from this site to no avail. Ended up calling Apple support and spent an hour diagnosing and fixing the problem. Apple checked the network settings and found that a network proxy box had been checked off and this was blocking access to the send (SMTP server). Restarted in safe mode and ran a malware identification and removal program. This identified 16 threats which was quite surprising as I am very careful about the sites I visit, email I open, etc. Once identified and removed we changed the network location (created a new location name). Upon restarting the computer, the problem was solved. Apple support was tremendous. They also recommended installing Malwarebytes for Mac to help prevent future malware infestation. I will certainly do that.
