lost iPad

I left my iPad on a train and while I am waiting to see if it can be found I am using an old ipad. I'm trying to restore some of the apps I use daily on this old iPad in the meanwhile. I don't want to erase the new iPad since I still have hope it might be found (it shows location on "find my phone"). By updating the software on the old ipad will I be erasing the new one?
