iPhone 3G mobileme / iCloud login problems

Hi - I'm resurrecting an old iPhone 3G for my kids to I can track them using FindMyIphone, but am having problems logging into my iCloud account.

The Apple ID seems to be linked correctly in App Store. However I can't see the device registered to me in iCloud or FindMyIphone app on my iPhone XS.

I have tried setting up a MobileMe account in Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendar->Add Account->MobileMe, but I get an error saying Verification Failed - the certificate for this server is invalid. You might be connecting to a server that is pretending to be "setup.me.com".

I have confirmed connection to me.com works in Safari.

Any ideas?

The entire MobileMe network was shut down years ago now. It was replaced by iCloud. And to use iCloud you need as a minimum iOS 5, which your iPhone 3G cannot run, since the 3G cannot run anything beyond iOS 4.2. And find my iPhone or find my friends requires an iCloud account.

If you had a Me.com email address it still works, but solely as an alias to your iCloud account - iCloud: About your @icloud.com, @me.com, and @mac.com email addresses - Apple Support
