Airpods Always Disconnecting on All Devices

I have my 1st gen airpods about more than 1 year ago and have been using it on my iPhone X, iPad Mini and HP laptop with no issues. Just recently, my airpods always disconnects to these devices after about 1 minutes listening to music. Reconnecting it, only the left unit is functioning and disconnects again after a minute. I have tried resettting it and it works properly for about a minute and the same issue occurs. Tried other suggestions like closing other bluetooth connections of other devices, disabling automatic ear detection, etc but I still encounter the same issue. Note that the batteries are more than 95% charged. The same issue happens to my iPhone X, iPad mini and HP Spectre laptop. Note that the airpod firmware is 6.7.8. Has anybody experiencing the same issue? It's frustrating as I cannot use my airpods. Any suggestions? How can I downgrade the firmware? Hoping for a solution to this. Thank you.

You cannot downgrade the firmware. But you can try resetting it to its factory settings by:

  1. Going into Bluetooth settings on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, and forget the device.
  2. Place both of your AirPods in its charging case and leave the case lid open.
  3. Press an hold the button(located at the back of the charging case) for at least 15 seconds. You’ll start seeing the LED indicator flash white.
  4. After 15 seconds, you’ll see the LED indicator flash Amber a couple of times.
  5. After that, you have reset your AirPods to factory settings and you may let go of the button.
  6. Try pairing your airpods to your phone and hopefully this fixes your issue!

If this does not fix the issue, try rebooting your devices and see if that helps. If not, I would take it to the Apple Store and get it checked out. Good luck!

No by updating to firmware 6.8.8 didn't help, then I waited for iOS 13 and updated the same, but then I could hear music in the airpods continuously for sometime. But when tried to make a call in between left airpod got disconnected and after some seconds right as well. So firmware update 6.8.8 or iOS 13 has not helped first series airpods. However, it is very annoying that Apple is not addressing this issue in any platform.

Last week I contacted Apple and told them about this issue and they tried all normal means to rectify the defect (restarting the airpod, reconnecting etc.). Then they advised me to go to nearest apple store and issued a ticket number. When I went to apple store even before checking my ticket number and to listen to my complain, they told it is the problem with headsets and I have to change it and each piece will cost me $73 and will cost me $146 in total... which I told them is absurd and why I should buy the same type or upgraded versions if I cannot count on their quality or performance.

Even I told them there is no defect in the headsets as it is working and is getting disconnected after 30-40 secs. Without even listening to me the apple store personnel is insisting that it is the problem of the headset and not any software issue and by listening to everything I understood apple has done this purposely and have advised all of their service centers to tell to customers as above in order to increase the sale of airpod successors, which is completely unacceptable, ridiculous and unfair.

So I have decided not to go with airpods any more and will discourage all of my friends and known persons from buying such defective stuffs. There are similar headsets available for $20 (twenty US dollars) online with more features and quality than airpods but will connect only with iPhone, Mac and iPad and unfortunately no connectivity with apple watch. However, it is better to spend 100s of dollars and buy defective models.

i have a similar issue as well the left disconnects after 3 mins and the right disconnects after like 8 mins and i have tried resetting the airpods , reseting the network settings , i would think it is the software issue as well as they were working fine until a month ago . Hopefully apple has a fix in the works cause there is no guarantee this wont happen again even if i have to get new airpods . Very surprising that Apple products would have an issue like this especially for something that is only a year and half old .

I am experiencing the same issue with my 1st Gen AirPods. I take them out of the case, put them on and both of the pods work fine for about 20-30 seconds. Then the left pod cuts out, while the right one continues doing whatever it was doing.

I have to plug the left pod back into the case (where it says 99-100% battery charge) and then I put it back in my left ear to work - for another 20-30 seconds before it cuts out again.

I've tried resetting the AirPods to factory settings (i.e. pressing the back button until the light turns white then amber), and I've also reset my iPhone's network settings - none of these worked.

This really seems like a firmware issue because it never did that before the firmware updates since last year.

I test for my AIRPOD 1. The right headset drops the battery level from full charge to 85% in less than 10 mins. Then music cuts off. I put the right headset to the box and it can charge to full charge again in a few minutes. Then I play the music again. The connection cuts off again in a few minutes later when the battery drops to 84-85%. Sure it is a battery issue.

"Because Apple’s “battery service” for AirPods is code for “throwing it away."

In the Greenpeace 2017 Guide to Greener Electronics, Apple got a “B-” grade overall because of its commitments to using

renewable energy and efforts to create a closed-loop supply chain. But the environmental group gave Apple a “D” in the category of product life extension, because it has “consistently made it more difficult for customers to repair their devices, replace their batteries, or upgrade the devices so that they continue to stay in use.”

Good article for all users use AIRPOD.

Tech told me if I want to fix it cost $138 for both headset. End up I bought new airpod pro with $249.99. I am so disappointed because I trust Apple’s quality..

I just got off the phone with Apple representative. I have never seen anyone so disrespectful. I called in about 1st generation airpods with a similar problem with everyone posted in this thread. I had purchased my device in Jul 2017 and I already knew that the device was well out of the warranty period. I have talked to about five representatives regarding the matter today, but Senior Advisor Rob was by far the most rude customer rep I have ever met. While all of the representatives that I had talked to today had provided me with only one option of replacing the current airpods at cost of $160 where the 2nd generation are being sold at $130 (Best Buy). I already know that option is not even worth considering, but wanted to find some answers to why such disconnection is happening after seeing 15 pages of people facing the similar problem. I had started out talking to a regular customer rep than to a supervisor who had led me to Senior Advisor Rob. I have explained him of the situation and the comments I had read on this thread, that if it would be possibility of problem caused by the Apple's firmware update. The representative said this thread is like a wikipedia cannot make decision based on the information on the thread. I asked him if he is implying that the thread has no credibility, he mentioned that he is not in a place to judge such credibility. I think that if he is making a call to not accept the arguments made here, he did make a decision on how much credit he is willing to put on this thread. After a few min of explaining that my ONLY option is to go with the out of warranty repair ($160) his tone changed and gotten aggressive. Only thing I wanted to understand was why such disconnections were happening as it has been experienced by 15 pages of people and this was my only question. He asked if I had any other question than this and before I got to finish saying no he hung up on me. I was so furious with the attitude he had shown and tried call back to the customer service but was met with automated message with no option to talk to a customer rep. (I wonder if they could block you from calling). I really hope this would not be the face of the Apple that I would remember as I have been a loyal apple customer owning a Macbook, Ipad, Iphone, and airpods (owned apple watch too but gave that up) and they would get around to fix this problem with the generation 1 airpods.

This is so obviously caused by the firmware.

All of our family (4 people) has the exact same issue, and apparently started at about the same time.

Batteries are all good, sound is good. It's just that one random left or right earphone disconnects and 50% of the time leave the sound in one ear, or moves the sound to the internal iphone speaker.

One can easily reconnect the disconnected device by placing it in its charging case for a few seconds. This initiates a charging cycle and when inserted in ear again initialize a bluetooth connection and reconnects for a while (1min - 5min) before DISCONNECTING AGAIN!!!

This is so frustrating!

Why will Apple not fix this?

Personally I was an Android user for 10 years, before I took the step over to Apple and have really been enjoying the responsiveness of iOS. As well the stability of macOS on the MacBook Pro that I also bought making the move from Windows (which I don't miss), but the laptop has it's own issue with swollen battery. And yes Apple offers a battery replacement program for MacBook Pro 15" but only for devices manufactured year 2015, and no mine is probably made 2016 and they don't have any issues with them!?? Well they do offer the option to replace the battery for about $250 its just that it takes them 3-5 days to do it and I'm not allowed to buy just the batteri without the service. It takes me 30 minutes to replace it, I know as I bought a third party battery. I must have missed that they offer one week of income as this my professional work tool. Seriously can Apple get any worse at costumer care?!

I will make one more try to by a battery and if I'm not allowed I will happily buy a new high-end laptop computer from someone else and install Linux on it.

Sorry for losing track of the Airpod issue, but anger makes one loose control, today they were close to get tossed into the ocean!!

APPLE DO SOMETHING TO FIX THIS!!!
