Yesterday, July 18, 2019, I started getting a popup window for Microsoft AutoUpdate that says Required data notice. Is this a virus or malware. I've never seen it before, and I don't use Microsoft software. Where is this coming from, and how do I get rid of it?

Thanks for the tip. Searched installations and found Skype for Business and Microsoft AutoUpdate installed on the same date. I participated in a Skype session a few months ago and forgot about it. I removed the Skype for business app and related items along with the files mentioned above. The annoying popup is gone on restart. Thank you.

It stands to reason that if you don't use anything from Microsoft then you can remove it.
As I wrote I don't have any Microsoft products installed on my Macs, the com.microsoft.autoupdate.helper.plist and com.microsoft.update.agent.plist files are not present, and that notice does not appear.
To see a comprehensive list of applications installed on your Mac use (Apple menu) > About This Mac > System Report... > Software > Installations.

I don't know what it is, and I don't use any Microsoft products either.
Please examine the contents of the following three folders:
~/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchDaemons
Post their respective contents.
I found this file in the library /Launch Agents folder: . com.microsoft.update.agent.plist And, this file in the Launch Daemon folder: com.microsoft.autoupdate.helper.plist
They were created on July 18 - I'm not sure how, though. Or, where they came from.
I need detailed steps to remove the Microsoft Autoupdate Required Data Notification pop up from my Mac desktop, El Capitan OS X. Having it keeps me from being able to close down my Mac. I don't have any Microsoft installaltions, only Adobe flash player. Thank you to anybody who can help me.
No idea. Skype, perhaps? OneDrive? Microsoft owns them. In any event either one of those files is the likely cause.
I use Office on my MBP and the same popup appeared - is it a Malware?
Should not Microsoft and or Apple be advising us?
I should think there would some sort of notification from either or both. What sort of data do they want? Wondering if it's okay to remove these files.

It is a malware - Apple support verified it.
Is there an article where this is reported? Were there instructions for getting rid of it?
John Galt's announcing that "Mystery solved" is not a fact with me. I removed the two files, and the condition still continued...
Please see the attached pdf on this subject. This problem still persists even though 1. com.microsoft.update.agent.plist, and,
2. com.microsoft.autoupdate.helper.plist are deleted.
