Serious 5th generation iPad problems.

About one month ago, my iPad (5th generation) began having a huge delay in push notifications for iMessage. Sometimes I’ll get a notification for a text sent to me via iMessage saying it was sent several hours previously - once it was even the following day before I received the notification. And no, the messages are not there, (on iMessage), before I get the notifications They don’t show up until I get the notification of the message. Shortly after that started, my iPad began running very slow compared to what had previously been my “normal”. I have not changed WiFi service, and multiple family members also have Apple devices and are experiencing no problems of this sort. Then today, I noticed serious battery drain happening, which I’ve never had prior to this. Again, other Apple devices in the household are not experiencing the problem. My software is up to date, as is my iMessage app version, and a hard restart of my iPad has no effect on what’s going on. I’d appreciate any suggestions for tracking down the source of the problem and fixing it. Two family members are “Apple veterans”, in that they’ve had Apple devices since “the cave man days”, and have multiple Apple devices and much experience with them -one even works in the IT industry - and they don’t have a clue what the problem is nor how to remedy it. I really need some help with this. Thank you!

Your iPad is as near full as it can get!

iOS needs, at a maintained bare minimum, 2-3 GBs, OR GREATER of free internal data storage for iOS to operate and perform acceptably!.

You are at the bottom of this limit.

If you need to free up free data storage space on an iPad/iDevice, you need to start by backing up your iPad to

either Apple's iCloud or by connecting your iDevice to a computer running the latest iTunes or some other offsite, “cloud” data storage service, like Google Drive/Photos, DropBox, Box, etc.

Then, delete any installed apps that you no longer use or use infrequently enough that they aren't missed (you can

always reinstalled any purchased or free apps at some time later, as you need them).

Thin out/delete any music/videos/movies/TV shows/images/eBooks/eMagazine/iBooks/audio books/Documents/PDFs, etc.

If you use a POP email account on your iPad, delete/thin out any old saved emails that maybe saved to your iPad.

To permanently delete photos/images off of your iDevice go into the Photos app and find the Recently Deleted

folder/album and permanently delete any photos/images stored in that folder/album.

Also, you can check to see what stuff is eating up all your valuable data storage space by going into the Settings

App,,General Settings Panel, in the right hand column, tap Storage & iCloud usage panel ( in iOS 11, it’s iPad Storage ), in the top Storage Panel, tap the Manage Storage panel, wait for a list of apps to generate that will tell you how much space each app is taking up on your iDevice.

Then, do a hard reset of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until your

iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons.

Best of Luck to You!

While I know zmclearan is being very helpful, I fear the link provided may not be the best link for you to follow. The link provided would suggest you have already tried to restore your device and you can't.

I don't believe that's your situation. The suggestion to restore the device is spot on as it will likely fix whatever may be going on. However, this link provides how to restore from backup which should be the best option to get you started:

I have 26.1 GB being used out of 32 GB, so I don’t have a bunch of internal storage available, but I’m not out of space either. I just learned this morning how to shut down backround-running apps, and I did have waaay too many, so no doubt that played into the problems in a big way. I honestly didn’t even think about open tabs on a browser, nor did I read it in the articles I read when trying to research the problem- but it makes sense! So I’m headed to shut down any open tabs right now. Thank you so much for your help!

Thank you so much! Obviously I don’t understand exactly how internal storage works, but I’m grateful you gave me the basics. I’ll look into more so i have a better understanding on it. But in the meantime,I’ll do as you suggested. Since I have an iCloud storage plan through Apple that I still have TONS of room available on, it shouldn’t be a problem to offload a lot of things that are taking up internal storage. Between that, and archiving/deleting unused and not frequently used apps, I should be in much better shape functionally. I’m so very grateful for all the help! I hope I learn enough to be helpful to others in my position one day.

Right. I did understand that part. I just chose misleading words in my description. By “archiving”, I meant to put my infrequently used apps “in storage” on iCloud, so to speak, to be downloaded again from the cloud should I need them. Does doing this mean they still take up some internal storage? If they do, I’d be better off deleting them instead, and reinstalling them should I need to. Thanks for the clarification!

Thank you. I had an iPad many moons ago, and pretty well understood how things on it worked at that time. But technology has advanced so much! I’ve had this iPad for about a year and a half, and obviously do not have a serious grasp on function basics. It’s most definitely “back to school” for this Nana! Hopefully I’ll be able to give back at some point and help others struggling like I am now. That’s what makes these help communities great!
