HDMI TV resolution

Hi from a newbie,

I have a Panasonic 4K TV, latest 40" model.

If I connect it to my macbook (retina, 12", early 2016) using a USB-C to

HDMI adapter cable, then it displays at 3840x2160, 60 Hz

However if I use the same cable to connect to my macbook pro (15", 2018)

then it's 3840x2160 at only 24 Hz, and no way in the settings to change

the refresh rate.

Any ideas?

Mojave 10.14.6 has fixed it! I guess my TV was too new for the previous version.

The screen and cable do support 3840 x 2160 @ 60 Hz

If I connect to my MacBook (12", early 2016) I get 3840 x 2160 @ 60 Hz

If I connect THE SAME screen and cable to my MacBook Pro (15", 2018) I only get 3840 x 2160 @ 24 Hz and no way to change in the settings.

Does the older, cheaper model really have better graphics capability? Both are running Mojave 10.14.5

Hi mibby_1,

Thanks for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. I understand that you're seeing a difference in the refresh rates when connecting via a USB-C to HDMI adapter to use a 4K TV as a display. I can see why you'd reach out about this difference; I'd like to help. Take a look at the information below:

"Mac computers compatible with HDMI via adapter

The following Mac models support resolutions and refresh rates of up to 1080p at 60Hz, and 3840 x 2160 at 30Hz, over HDMI 1.4b when using the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter with macOS Sierra 10.12 or later:

    • iMac (2017 and later)
    • iMac Pro (2017)
    • MacBook (2015 and later)
    • MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2018)
    • MacBook Pro (2016 and later)

The computers listed above also support 60Hz refresh rate over HDMI when used with a supported HDMI 2.0 display, HDMI Premium Certified cable, and a compatible third-party USB-C to HDMI 2.0 adapter.

If the HDMI display that's connected to your Mac starts up to the Apple logo but then goes dark, you might need to update your HDMI cable. To ensure compatibility, and to achieve 4K resolution, Apple recommends a cable that supports HDMI 2.0 or later, such as the Belkin Ultra High Speed 4K HDMI Cable."

Use 4K displays, 5K displays, and Ultra HD TVs with your Mac

I'd recommend verifying that the adapter and HDMI cable you're using will support the 60Hz refresh rate per the specifications above.

Best Regards.
