Some of the pentalobe bits with tool kits come with a very sharp point which isn't able to grab the screwhead. Using a more shallow pentalobe driver may work too depending on how damaged the screw head is.

Sometimes I can use a slightly larger driver or even a completely different type of screwdriver blade. A lot of times you can get a jewelers straight blade screwdriver to fit into the opening and grab just enough to loosen it. Chances are you will ruin the blade.

I've also had to use some tapping on the driver while turning the driver which is another technique I learned which can help break a screw loose, but you have to be so careful doing this on a laptop. For a laptop you open the display and have the keyboard upside down on the bench with the display hanging over the edge so it is not damaged.

The answers come from much larger bolts and screws used for automotive applications.

The thing that is holding the screw in place is the friction under the head of the screw, creating tension on the threads. Remove the head of the screw (by severing it).

If you have a "left hand" drill bit (commonly sold in screw extractor sets) you can use it to try to spin the entire screw in the loosening direction. if not, use a conventional drill which, by estimate, is slightly larger that the body of the screw.

When you drill through the screw-head and sever it, the retained piece (e.g, bottom plate) can be removed. The 'stump" of the screw will no longer be held under pressure from the head, and can readily be gripped and removed with pliers.

You may need a replacement screw some day.
