iCloud password not accepted

I keep getting a message that my iCloud access has been disconnected. When I go to my iCloud preferences and input my (known good) password, I get an error message saying an unknown error has occurred - and that's as far as I can get. Yet when I sign in to the Apple discussions with the same password, everything is OK.

What is likely causing this iCloud access problem, and how can I get around it?

Thanks.

Paul.

See this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8511045

Not necessarily you have signed out from iCloud , there could be other reasons such as altering read and write permissions in shared , home folder or changing locations services .

Enter in user library , click on finder and click on Go > keep on holding option key and again click on library > find a folder preferences > drag and drop com.apple.systempreferences.plist to the desktop , restart the Mac open safari and browse for few minutes .

Note : safe mode , creating a new test user account will not help , the issue seems with keychain or system files are corrupted ( it could lead to reinstall Mac OS see this https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT204904

Also take second opinion from apple support senior care advisors see this link https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201232
