SMS Text Messaging

I have an iPhone 8 (IOS 12.3.1) but SMS Text Messaging isn't working (iMessage DOES work, as do all other functions and services, as far as I can tell). Neither:

**5005*7672*120631****#

nor

*# 5005***#

provide any meaningful response "Error performing request. Unknown Error". Please advise ... any help gratefully received.

Contact the Carrier who provided you the SIM.

Forgive my ignorance, but what are those strings supposed to achieve?

Without knowing the answer, it seems a carrier issue as they "own" SMS and are responsible for it's transportation from point a to b.

In fact, I see the longer string on TMobile's support site. Is that way to select a specific SMS routing number?
