Mac Mini: HDMI to DVI-D or Mini Displayport to DVI-D?

HDMI to DVI is simpler since it's just a connector change, no electronics, so should be cheaper.

It all depends on personal preference. Both routes will accomplish the same task for similar money. It all depends if you need to keep your Mini-Display port unoccupied or your HDMI port unoccupied while using your Mac mini on your desk.

You're right, I should have said single-link instead of standard and dual-link instead of DVI-D.

Either way will be better than VGA. Adding that a standard DVI connection will be fine for that 20" dell monitor and that a DVI-D connection would only be required for a higher resolution 24" or larger monitor.

FWIW, we have a 2010 Mac Mini and a couple of 2012 Mac Mini's all using dual DVI monitors. However, we are using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter and an HDMI to DVI adapter on all three setups.

The last D in DVI-D just means the connector is digital only, and does not include analog video. DVI-D can be single or dual link. In this case, single-link is sufficient.
