AirPorts ... may they rest in peace

I LOVED my AirPort! But it will not be continued, so I hear ;-(

With the discontinuation of the AirPort family of products, what is the best option for full interoperability of all Apple devices, AppleTV, iPhone, iPad, Apple HOME device interoperability, etc.

Time will tell I guess. I still have to say I think they’ve been going downhill since Steve Jobs left the company. There’s no resolution for this thread so I will just resolve it anyway. Thank you all for your contributions !

Basically any current manufacturers' networking hardware will work. However, there are, at least, three areas that you will need to overcome as there are currently no direct replacements:

  1. Using the AirPort Utility to manage the base station configuration. Just about all non-Apple routers use a web-based solution to administer them.
  2. There are no direct equivalent to the Time Capsule that provide both wireless routing and come with a built-in hard drive.
  3. There are no direct equivalent to the AirPort Express that provides both wireless routing and performs as an AirPlay "player."

No one here can provide you with an "official" answer to that question ... only Apple can, and they historically have never announced any details on future products. At best, you will get speculation.

FWIW, a number of us here have been migrating away from Apple networking hardware since their announcement awhile back. In my case, I have replaced my Apple gear with that from the Ubiquiti UniFi line with only a single Time Capsule that I retained for simple file sharing services. Time Machine backups are going to both a directly attached WD My Book Pro and a Synology NAS. AirPlay streaming is going to my Apple TVs or other third-party AirPlay-enabled devices.

Your replacement options will hinge around, whether or not, your home is pre-wired for Ethernet. If so, you have a better chance to go with networking hardware that will provide you with the best overall bandwidth. If not, you will find that you will trade convenience for speed.

Apple are most secretive company on earth. No info is provided to the unwashed masses.

I am 99.9% sure they will never make another router. You do not shutdown a division of the company you plan to reopen.

Apple work on margins.. airports dropped to unacceptable returns even though at the end they are way overpriced.

I will add one extra item to Tesserax list.

#4. Bonjour compatibility. Apple built a bonjour sleep proxy into the airports and apple TV. No other company will ever do this.. but a lot of wireless routers do not handle bonjour at all well.

Your guess is as good as mine.

However I cannot see them moving main router functionality into the ATV. A simple WAP perhaps. Speculation on this goes way back.. and Apple have not done it since ATV1 which was entire computer. You cannot mix routers on a network.. one router must control the network.

Perhaps they will move away from Bonjour since they have moved to SMB protocol networking they will adopt a more windows centric network approach.

The interesting thing is the gaping hole in product lineup without a network target for Time Machine. And no iCloud replacement except for special apps like photos (which causes more problems.) I do think apple still intend to move more and more so Mac is just a terminal to iCloud.
