Stay logged into account on restart
How do I set preference for iMac to stay logged into my account on restart? New Mac and new OS version. Now asks for password on each startup, a pain since computer is in my home.

System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Options. Set "Automatic login:". If you have Filevault enabled you can't override signing in.

Ok here goes.
You can’t.
Thanks for the answer. Too bad Apple knows better than we how we manage our lives. Just like stopping support for Aperture after I collected 89,000 images there and which now will not transfer to Photos.
I wholeheartedly agree with Aperture though I transferred all my shots to Photos in their original projects, now as albums. Less functionality and annoyingly sends me memories but hey what’s loss of expertise and £50.
Re your original question you would not only need to protect files but somehow also your calendar, notes, contacts, emails, turn off keychain and delete all autocomplete passwords.
Thanks to you and others who gave a correct response. I also appreciate everyone’s concerns for my privacy and I share them. I do sign out when I am away and frankly my Mac is mainly for photos and family emails. I don’t use keychain and no bank, credit card, etc. info is available there without secure password.
If a burglar took it, it would not be in your home, and surely all he needs to do then is restart it?
Hardly an attempt to answer the question. All sensitive files are password protected.
All my caveats still remain. If you do that keep it in a safe.
It’s why I suggested he can’t do it. If a user asks how to shoot himself in the foot I’m not going to show him where the bullets are
That is very different than "you can't".
Thanks for that
You're welcome.
