iTunes / iPhone music playback quality issues

Over the past year or so, the playback quality on certain CD's I've burned into iTunes has become terrible. Only on certain harder music like Tool or NIN, although some others are fine. It's so bad you can't even listen to the music. It sounds like there's too much bass or something has come loose inside the speaker.

When playing the music directly from iTunes on my computer speakers or a bluetooth speaker it sounds perfect. But playing on a Bose or Sony bluetooth speaker, in my car on bluetooth or in my car on AUX, or even with Apple earphones it's all the same when through my phone.

My iPhone is a 7 Plus and I'm on the latest versions of iTunes and iPhone software. I've deleted all of the CD's with issues from iTunes and my iPhone and burned them again with no luck. Any ideas?

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities DonRoritor,

I see that you're having an issue with the sound on your iPhone when playing CDs that you have burned into iTunes. I can understand your concern, and I'd be happy to help.

Let's start by having you take a look at your settings to see if you can adjust them to help with the sound on your iPhone. The following article will guide you through those steps.

Sound Check, EQ, and volume limit settings on iPhone

If after making these adjustments, the issue still remains, respond back with the answers to the following questions.

  1. Does this happen when using other apps to play audio or video with?
  2. You mentioned that this started over a year ago, did they play fine before? Did this start after an update or getting a new device?
  3. If you quit the Music app and restart your iPhone, does the issue remain?

Turning Soundcheck off, reduced the issue by 90% but you can still tell there's a quality issue. At least I can listen to these albums now with what sounds like slightly less bass and a little crackling.

Answers to your other questions:

  1. No. It only happens when playing the music from the iPhone on video, no idea on audio as iTunes is all I use.
  2. I didn't pay too much attention to it and can't be sure. I figured it would fixed at some point from a new release/update.
  3. Yes.

Any other ideas? Otherwise, thanks for the info.

Hello DonRoritor,

Thanks for getting back to us and trying those steps and keeping us updated. Glad to hear that this definitely helped.

Are you able to test with a video, say from YouTube, and see if the audio is any different? Also, does it only happen with the CDs that you've burned and put in to iTunes? If you play other songs that you may have purchased from iTunes, does the issue remain? Gaining as much information as possible can help to isolate this issue that you've been having.
