Looks like a temperary thing. Should be able to install some macOS. You might want to see if you can install from a flash drive.

No need to panic. Let's wait for someone with more knowledge than me to come along.

R asked me to take a look here...

See if you can upgrade to 10.12, 10.13, or 10.14, see sys requirements...

CatalogURL for macOS 10.13 (High Sierra)...

1. Start up from macOS Recovery

To start up from macOS Recovery, turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold one of the following combinations on your keyboard. Command-R is generally recommended, especially if you never installed macOS Sierra 10.12.4 or later.

Command (⌘)-R

Install the latest macOS that was installed on your Mac.

Option-⌘-R

Upgrade to the latest macOS compatible with your Mac.

Shift-Option-⌘-R

Install the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version still available.

2. Decide whether to erase (format) your disk

If you need to erase your disk before installing macOS, select Disk Utility from the Utilities window, then click Continue. You probably don't need to erase, unless you're selling or giving away your Mac or have an issue that requires you to erase. Learn more about when and how to erase.

3. Install macOS

After starting up from macOS Recovery, follow these steps to install macOS:

1 Choose Reinstall macOS (or Reinstall OS X) from the Utilities window.

2 Click Continue, then follow the onscreen instructions to choose your disk and begin installation.

3 If the installer asks to unlock your disk, enter the password you use to log in to your Mac. If it doesn't see your disk, or it says that it can't install on your computer or volume, you might need to erase your disk.

1 Please allow installation to complete without putting your Mac to sleep or closing its lid. During installation, your Mac might restart and show a progress bar several times, and the screen might be empty for minutes at a time.

If your Mac restarts to a setup assistant, but you're selling or giving it away, press Command-Q to quit the assistant without completing setup. Then click Shut Down. When the new owner starts up the Mac, they can use their own information to complete setup.

If you never installed macOS Sierra 10.12.4

If macOS Sierra 10.12.4 or later was never installed on your Mac, macOS Recovery works differently:

• Command-R is still the recommended way to start up from macOS Recovery. This combination makes sure that the installation isn't associated with your Apple ID, which is important if you're selling or giving away your Mac.

• Option-Command-R installs the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version still available.

• Shift-Option-Command-R isn't available.

That “Temporarily unavailable” stuff is a common issue lately.

You're going to be duplicating what the previous owner would have had a somewhat easier time of, unfortunately.

That process usually starts with using Recovery to erase and format as GPT and HFS+ and to then install macOS, or—more likely, given that’s the path that usually fails, and that’s what you’re likely encountering here—using another Mac to download El Capitan, or High Sierra, or Mojave, and then building a bootable installer, booting that installer on your new Mac, erasing and formatting the internal storage as GPT and HFS+, and installing macOS from the installer.

Pick the most recent version of macOS supported by this Mac.

Recovery has a habit of not working here, particularly if you've not previously been running the original version of macOS that was first associated with this Mac.

If possible, you need to get rid of the Mobile Device Management (MDM) . This article explains your options: https://www.jamf.com/jamf-nation/discussions/22208/removing-mdm-profiles Basically, reformat the drive. reinstall macOS. If a MDM comes back, the college never un-enrolled the device from the Device Enrollment Program, DEP. Apple's policy is that the college should have before they sold the device. I have no experienced with managed accounts.

It would be interesting to get an external drive: install macOS on it, boot from the external and see if managed to ditch "manager".

Try booting to the startup manger. You will need to do this to boot off of an external drive. [ This could be blocked. If so, an external drive will not help. ]

First time, after power on I saw just login (El Capitan). After this I created another admin account, but some of options in preferences were not active. So I decided to reinstall fresh copy. I tried few times, but without any result. After this I wiped primary partition (besides Recovery doesn't work also) and tried one more time. Nothing new (

Maybe I should install other version of OS ?

I'm not getting a good visual image of what is going. I'm a visual person.

I assume that command + 3 will not work at this stage. Get a camera and take pictures of these error messages.

How to show us a screen image. Avoid personal identification.

(1) On the Mac you do:

command + shift + 3 Will take entire screen. You hear a click.

command + shift + 4 Lets you decide what to take. Mouse pointer changes. Move mouse to upper left corner of desire image. Hold down left mouse key where to start image. Drag mouse to lower left of where you want to stop image. Release mouse.

You will get a file starting with Screen Shot ... .png on the desktop. example:

Screen Shot 2016-09-20 at 2.27.47 PM

(2) To upload the image in ASC, click on image icon.

You see the open file dialog.

Select the image.

How did you go about re-installing macOS. Did you try twice to re-install and the first re-install didn't work? MacOS re-install like to move you up to the latest macOS.

Without anything - just locked !!!

So, the initial status was you tried to boot the machine and it would not boot? What screen did it end up with?

installed El Capitan.

What do you mean by this? Was it successful?

When I tried to reinstall I got message, that item is temporary unavailable

Is this the second install or the first re-install? How did you go about this install?

Pictures would be helpful.

How I solved it:

I found image of OS X 10.9 Mavericks - the oldest, which I could download. (because I read before, that it will be better to install OS which was installed from the beginning....)

I wrote that image to USB Flash Drive with TransMac (usually I'm using "another" OS)

After that, I wiped hard drive (with recovery partition, which I couldn't use because of previous apple id I think?)

And my hope was, that this is enough, but not yet)

During installation process I got new "problem" - This copy of the Install OS X Mavericks application can't be verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading

Solved by changing current date (because of certificates)

Also thanks to guys from https://techion.com.au/blog/2013/10/30/mavericks-application-cant-be-verified

And after everything were as should be !

Thanks to all of you one more time !!!

Maybe we can solve one more problem with another one, which is the same !!? (that fixed one after some steps didn't load)

So, first of all, before login screen appears, I see the dialog box with agreement, then press OK, and after it asks me about login....

I found the way, how I can create another "Admin account" and login, but some of settings in "System Preferences" are inactive....

Maybe you can share your ideas about it ?

And thanks to all of you one more time !!!

You got in trouble because you loaded an ancient version. Don’t. Load the latest.

Transmac? Use the privided createinstallmedia tool. That works with El Capitan and later. Again, load the latest.

As for your “how do I create another admin user?” question, using your admin login, open up system preferences > users & groups, unlock the preferences, and add an account and set it as an admin user.

It would be best if you created another discussion with this question.

I found the way, how I can create another "Admin account" and login, but some of settings in "System Preferences" are inactive....

So you created a second admin account. Not sure why this was needed, but cannot argue with success.

We need more information about what you did and what didn't work. Pictures would be handy.

And thanks to all of you one more time !!!

Gland you were able to sort through all the issues.

Thanks you, R !

First of all we need to understand in which condition is that iMac - so, as I told before, it was at the *** institute (i really don't like them because of what they sold with their apple id, so I got just few bricks)

Now, before login dialog appears their "agreement" and 1 button OK

So, the first question is - is it Parental Control and Managed User Account ?

Also, I should say, that all my life I was using wind.. Os - that's why some things are too complicated (when comparing) and weird for me))

For now I can boot in the "single user mode" with localhost/root..... But I even cannot remember, nor lgin, nor paswd, which I created few months ago ((

Really appreciate, thank you !

Hi R !

Few words about first one(they were same before, MANAGED !!!! acc, El Capitan) and I think it can be helpful for those who afraid of doing smsth.... or not)

!!! Important-SAVE your info(if you can) or do not do this if you are not familiar with terminal and not understanding what you are doingl!!!

So, as I remember(some time passed) - first of all, by booting in single-user mode, I found who we are and list of all users.

Then - passwordreset. After I tried .appleSetupDone .... After this - iMac never boot again (maybe because of Parental Control)

So I had no other options - I've installed the OLDEST OS X, also you need to change current date before ! I also wiped first partition, later - all HDD (maybe not necessary, but there were recovery partition) So I found image of OS X 10.9 Mavericks - the oldest, which I could downloaded and installed it (only after I changed the date - because of certificates) After these steps - everything was ok, I've updated it (there were about 4-5 times - step by step) and after this: High Sierra (latest).....

But this is not reasonable way for smart guys !

That's why it was curious to find another way..... - next post will be soon)

Aug 3, 2019 11:26 PM in response to Trushkin

"Another way", after first attempts was much easier, when you knew a little bit of what you are doing))

Directory Utility and System Preferences - when you could read and WRITE !!! you do not need any other solutions....

When you are seeing <System Administrator> (which is <root> also) simply we can change password there....

After these steps everything else is not difficult )

Thanks for your solutions !

Some of them were helpful, because for me it was the first "greetings" with Mac.......
