Ribbon Cable for MacBook Pro 7,1 (2010)

How do I identify the right ribbon cable for my MBP? After reading the symptoms and fixes listed in a previous thread about these cables, replacing that cable is my next step after just swapping out the original Mac hard drive for a new 500GB SSD.

thanks

Welcome!

I've not see a parts list for most Apple products. You can search vendors by the 7,1 code you found or, better yet, the Apple name: MacBook Pro Mid 2010 13-inch. The latter is more often used by parts vendors. If I do that, I get part number 922-9062 for the 2009 and 2010 13-inch MacBook Pros.

That number returns this list on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Apple+cable+922-9062&i=computers&ref=nb_sb_noss

Don't pay more that about US$15. I've seen some vendors asking US$40-50 and the is ridiculous.

Installation video here is for the 2011 model but is the same for the 2010: Hard Drive Cable

The 2009 and 2012 13-inch models share the same cable. The 2011 and 2012 each have a separate cable part number.

Thank you for your sacrifice and service, Sergeant.

I did a quick look and thought they had it. In any case Beetstech has it. The i company has it, but around $45. That one is complete with the bracket. The new one from Beetstech doesn't have the bracket, but that should be easy enough to transfer.

I remember one person posting here said that he brought his MBP in to get it checked out after an SSD fix and they installed a new ribbon connector. Didn't say if it cost anything or if it was a courtesy fix. But that was a mid-2012 I think, which is still supported for hardware parts.

Thanks for the information on Beetstech, I've used OWC for most of the updating I've done on this MBP, but that beetstech website looks great. I'm not ready to give up on the self-help yet, but may eventually resort to taking it in to a pro :-).

enjoy your day

I often have to be careful with my answers because I have a tendency to talk about DIY work. But you already stated that you were ready to open it up and your model has been "blessed" by Apple for DIY upgrades of the memory and drive. I suspect Apple no longer carries that part - not even for California where the 7 year repair part window is already up. The mid-2012 model is an outlier since it was produced until October 2016.

And really an SSD replacement will do wonders for any Unibody MBP. A 500 to 512 GB SSD sells for around $60-70 these days when it was several hundred a few years ago.

Like this ole MBP too much to not try to keep it running great,

I agree with you 100 proof! When I look at what MBPs are today--expensive, delicate, hard to fix--I cherish my Mid 2012 13" which is the same form factor as yours. It now has a 500GB OWC SSD and feels like a new computer.

Thanks so much for recognizing the "MSG"

You are most welcome. I planned for a military career including looking into univ ROTC programs until I found that my vision was so bad that they would not take me under any circumstances. That was during Nam. Now I'm early 70's and Medicare fixed my cataracts to give me 20/20 vision, so Uncle Sam may come looking for me!

I took the ASVAB in high school. Wasn't really planning on a military career but some teachers said it would be a good learning experience. Got calls from every single branch of the military and enough mail that my parents asked why I did it. My vision apparently wasn't an issue although they all told me that becoming a pilot wasn't going to happen.

My mom got cataract surgery but still needs reading glasses because replacement lenses won't correct astigmatism.

We're of the same generation ... I was drafted in '70, immediately re-enlisted to change what schooling they had in mind for me, then spent 11 months in RVN (www.thelastsevendays.com), and decided I liked working with the cutting edge toys we were getting into (computers, communications and networking) and stayed in for 20.

I need to check into that cataract surgery - I'm having to tilt my head to far back to read the screen with these trifocals ...
