iPhone passcode suddenly not accepted

A friend's iPhone 6s Plus was working OK last week. The passcode (6 digits) has been the same for months and the user unlocked the phone a few times during the day with no issues.

The phone was unlocked last week to take some photos, locked for a few minutes, picked up again and suddenly the passcode would not work.  It was definitely not changed by the user or anybody else ( I was with them at the time). Phone only has 1 attempt left before it locks completely.

Read about a very similar issue here:

https://www.cnet.com/news/my-iphone-changed-my-password-and-locked-me-out-what-gives/

but no email setup was attempted in this case, just taking photos.

We could restore the phone, but there are photos on it that were not backed up. I am aware that connecting iTunes would allow a backup, but there is no computer that it previously attached to to do this with.

Phone was on IOS 8, I managed to upgrade it to IOS 12 in update mode, but it still won't go past the lock screen.

Any idea if there is any way to retrieve the photos or what went wrong?

Many thanks.

The matter looks simple. You friend may have given his unlocked iPhone to someone for a brief period, say for a call or for viewing some of his photos.

It is extremely likely that someone may have accidentally or viciously changed it and now you are stuck with you friend.
