Why isn't my sd card not working on my MacBook pro?

Usually because SD cards are not formatted like typical Mac storage devices, they seldom show in the Mac Finder. There are two ways to deal with it--one is already installed on your computer.
1) The pre-installed solution is to launch Image Capture--it is in your Applications folder. The left-hand "device" pane will show your card; click it will make the image appear in the main. This example show an iPad attached but it works the same with cam cards--I use it all the time:
2) The second method is to download the image management software your camera maker supplies. Example" Nikon's ViewNX-i. The company's website should have it under "Support."

When traveling I use my MBP for daily backing up images on my Nikon DSLR. I've not loaded the Nikon software on the MBP because Image Capture takes care of archiving the images without issue.
